A retired teacher in Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh, reported that ₹3.4 lakh was withdrawn from his bank account after he downloaded a malicious APK file from WhatsApp, prompting a police FIR filed after a 19‑day delay.

Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh – Retired school teacher Kailash Soni fell victim to a cyber fraud when a seemingly harmless APK file sent via WhatsApp was installed on his smartphone. Within minutes of the download, his mobile device was compromised and a sum of ₹3.40 lakh was transferred out of his bank account without the need for an OTP.

The malicious application acted as a banking trojan, capturing login credentials and authorising transactions in the background. Such malware often exploits the trust users place in messaging apps, disguising itself as a legitimate update or utility.

Soni lodged a complaint after discovering the loss, accusing local police of a 19‑day delay in registering his First Information Report (FIR). The FIR was finally filed on [date], and authorities have begun a preliminary investigation to trace the perpetrators and recover the funds.

Cyber‑crime experts warn that similar scams are on the rise across India, urging citizens to avoid downloading files from unknown sources and to enable two‑factor authentication on banking apps.
