The Aam Aadmi Party has charged the Union government with leveraging the National Human Rights Commission to halt the Punjab government's Tirath Yatra initiative.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) publicly accused the central government of employing the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) as a tool to obstruct the Tirath Yatra scheme announced by the Punjab state administration. In a statement released on Tuesday, AAP leaders asserted that the move is aimed at undermining a programme intended to facilitate pilgrimages for residents of the state.
The Tirath Yatra scheme, unveiled by the Punjab government earlier this year, seeks to organise and subsidise travel for devotees to major religious sites across the country. While the scheme has been praised by some sections of the public, AAP claims that the Centre’s intervention through the NHRC is politically motivated.
The Union government and the NHRC have not issued an official response to the allegations as of now. AAP has called for a parliamentary debate and urged the NHRC to clarify its stance on the matter.
Political analysts note that the dispute adds another layer of tension between the AAP‑led state government and the central administration, potentially influencing upcoming electoral dynamics in Punjab.
