The Bihar government will start auctioning 361 ponds and tanks across 14 blocks of Nalanda district from September 15, with lease terms running up to June 2027 to promote aquaculture and raise revenue.

The state administration announced that 361 government‑owned water bodies, including ponds and tanks, will be put up for auction in Nalanda district. The process is scheduled to begin on 15 September and will cover all 14 blocks of the district.Each lease will be granted for a period that extends up to June 2027, after which the rights will revert to the government. The move is aimed at unlocking the commercial potential of these water assets.

Officials said the auction is part of a broader strategy to boost fish farming in Bihar. By allowing private operators to manage the water bodies, the government expects an increase in aquaculture production, which could create jobs and improve local nutrition.

The revenue generated from lease payments is projected to augment the state’s finances. The auction will be conducted through a transparent online platform, with interested parties required to submit bids and comply with stipulated environmental and operational guidelines. The administration hopes the initiative will set a precedent for similar programmes in other districts.

Stakeholders, including farmer groups and fisheries experts, have welcomed the step, noting that better-managed ponds can lead to higher fish yields and more sustainable water‑resource use.
