The Meghalaya Youth Congress has urged the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences to adopt an 80:20 split between general and reserved nursing posts.
Shillong, Meghalaya – Representatives of the Meghalaya Youth Congress met officials of the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) on Monday, pressing for a revised nursing recruitment policy. The party faction demanded that 80 percent of new nursing positions be allocated to open‑category candidates while the remaining 20 percent should be reserved for scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and other backward classes.
The demand stems from concerns that the current recruitment pattern does not reflect the institute’s regional staffing needs and that a higher open‑category share would attract a broader pool of qualified nurses. Youth Congress leaders argued that the proposed ratio aligns with the institute’s mandate to serve the North‑Eastern states while ensuring merit‑based selection.
NEIGRIHMS officials said the proposal would be examined by the institute’s governing council and forwarded to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for approval. No immediate decision was announced, and the Youth Congress pledged to continue lobbying for the change.
