Jagga Singh, a resident of Namol village near Sunam, swallowed poison in front of the district commissioner’s office after claiming he faced intimidation and police inaction over a video critical of a local strongman.
Jagga Singh, a young man from Namol village close to Sunam in Punjab, ingested poison in the open outside the district commissioner's office. He did so after stating that he had been repeatedly threatened for producing a video that exposed a local strongman, commonly referred to as a "chitte," and that the police had failed to intervene.
According to local reports, Singh approached the police with complaints of intimidation following the video's release, but no action was taken. Feeling abandoned and fearing for his safety, he decided to protest by attempting self‑harm in a public setting.
Emergency services rushed Singh to a nearby hospital where he received medical treatment. The police have registered a case against the village sarpanch, alleging that the sarpanch was involved in the threats against Singh.
The district commissioner's office issued a statement confirming that the matter is under investigation and that steps will be taken to ensure the safety of residents who raise concerns against powerful local figures.
Authorities have urged anyone facing similar intimidation to report incidents promptly, emphasizing that harassment over criticism of local leaders will not be tolerated.
