Women and villagers plant rice on flooded road in Shahdol to demand repair

On Raksha Bandhan, residents of Shahdol’s Byauhri Akhetpur Dala Tola planted rice on a water‑logged road, demanding its reconstruction.
Women and local residents gathered on a rain‑filled stretch of road in the Byauhri‑Akhetpur‑Dala Tola area of Shahdol district on Raksha Bandhan. The road, plagued by waterlogging and mud, has left about 400 families struggling with daily commutes.
In a symbolic protest, the participants sowed rice seedlings directly onto the muddy surface, illustrating the loss of agricultural land and the need for a functional roadway. While planting, they sang traditional folk songs, turning the demonstration into a cultural appeal for infrastructure development.
The demonstrators called on the district administration and the Public Works Department to expedite repairs and construct a durable road, emphasizing that the current condition hampers access to schools, markets and health facilities.
Local officials were briefed about the protest, and a spokesperson indicated that a site inspection would be scheduled, though no concrete timeline has been announced yet.
