West Bengal’s C‑section rate nears 50% of all births, health experts urge scrutiny

Nearly half of all deliveries in West Bengal are now performed by caesarean section, prompting calls for a detailed review of obstetric practices.

State health data released this week shows that close to one out of every two births in West Bengal is delivered by caesarean section, a figure that far exceeds the national average of around 20 per cent. The statistics, compiled from hospital records across Kolkata, Darjeeling and other districts, indicate a steady rise over the past five years.

Public health analysts point to the World Health Organization’s recommendation that C‑section rates should stay between 10 and 15 per cent of total births, arguing that the current level may reflect unnecessary surgical interventions. They warn that over‑use can increase risks for mothers and infants, including infections, longer recovery times and higher health‑care costs.

The state’s health ministry has said it will examine the drivers behind the surge, such as physician incentives, patient preferences and gaps in prenatal care. Officials have pledged to strengthen guidelines and promote awareness of safe vaginal delivery options, while urging hospitals to justify each surgical birth with clear medical indication.

Experts stress that a balanced approach is needed: while C‑sections can be life‑saving when medically required, the data suggests a systemic shift that warrants closer monitoring and policy action.
