The West Bengal health department will undertake a fresh verification of the qualifications and registration details of about 110,000 doctors practising in the state.

Kolkata, Nov 7 — The West Bengal health ministry announced a statewide drive to re‑verify the credentials of roughly 1.1 lakh doctors whose names appear on the state medical register. The exercise aims to confirm that every practitioner holds valid qualifications, a current registration with the Medical Council of India‑affiliated body, and no pending disciplinary actions.

Officials said the verification will be conducted through an online portal where doctors must upload scanned copies of their degree certificates, registration certificates and any specialty diplomas. A dedicated verification team will cross‑check the documents against university records and the council’s database. The deadline for submission has been set for the end of December, after which non‑compliant practitioners may face suspension of their registration.

The move follows concerns raised by patient‑rights groups about unqualified practitioners operating in rural clinics. By tightening the vetting process, the state hopes to bolster public confidence in medical services and curb malpractice.

Health Minister [Name] emphasized that the initiative does not target any individual but seeks to ensure uniform standards across the profession. The department will publish a list of doctors whose credentials are cleared, making it accessible to the public through the health ministry’s website.
