The West Bengal government will soon formulate regulations that prohibit teachers newly hired in government schools from taking part in any political activities, aiming to maintain educational neutrality.
Kolkata, Oct 30 — The West Bengal state administration has signalled its intention to introduce a set of guidelines that will restrict teachers appointed to government schools from engaging in political work. The move, announced through an official statement, is aimed at preserving the apolitical nature of public education and preventing any conflict of interest that may arise from teachers' involvement in party activities.
According to the draft, the prohibition will apply to teachers who joined the state school system after a specified cut‑off date, and will cover participation in rallies, campaigning, or holding party positions while in service. The government said the rules will be framed in consultation with the School Education Department and relevant teachers' unions to ensure compliance with existing service rules.
The initiative follows a broader trend across Indian states to reinforce the neutrality of public servants, especially in the education sector, where teachers wield significant influence over young minds. Officials indicated that the final regulations will be published in the official Gazette within the next few weeks.
