West Bengal reported 5,500 new dengue infections in October, marking a sharp late‑season rise in the disease across the state.

The state health department said that 5,500 dengue cases were confirmed in West Bengal during October, a significant increase compared with the usual post‑monsoon figures. The rise has been described as a late‑season surge, occurring after the typical peak period for the mosquito‑borne illness.
Health officials have activated additional surveillance teams and are urging residents to eliminate standing water around homes and public spaces. Mosquito control measures, including fogging and larvicidal sprays, have been intensified in districts reporting the highest case numbers.
The department also warned that hospitals are seeing a higher influx of patients with fever, joint pain and rash, symptoms consistent with dengue. Patients with warning signs are being referred to tertiary care facilities for closer monitoring.
Authorities have appealed for community cooperation, emphasizing that early detection and prompt medical attention are crucial to reduce complications and fatalities.
The state will continue to publish weekly updates on case numbers and will review vector‑control strategies ahead of the upcoming winter months.
