The West Bengal health ministry has mandated that all hospitals publicly list ICU beds by type, aiming to improve transparency for patients and families.

Kolkata, Oct 17 — The West Bengal health ministry issued a directive requiring every hospital in the state to publicly display the number of intensive care unit (ICU) beds they have, broken down by category such as general, COVID, and specialty care. The order, circulated to both public and private facilities, aims to streamline patient referrals and reduce confusion during emergencies.

Hospital administrators are instructed to update the information in real time on digital boards at reception areas and on the state health portal. The categorisation will help patients and relatives quickly identify where suitable beds are available, especially as the region continues to manage a high load of post‑COVID complications and other critical cases.

The health department said compliance will be monitored through periodic audits, and non‑compliant institutions may face penalties. Officials hope the measure will enhance transparency, improve bed allocation efficiency, and ultimately save lives.

The move follows similar initiatives in other Indian states that have sought to make healthcare resources more visible to the public. The ministry will review the impact of the directive after a month and consider further steps to strengthen critical care infrastructure.
