The West Bengal government has released an advisory affirming that producers in the film, television and OTT sectors can hire talent at their discretion, without external interference.

Kolkata, Oct 31 — The West Bengal state administration issued an advisory today addressing the film, television and over‑the‑top (OTT) streaming industry. The notice reiterates that producers retain full discretion in hiring actors, crew and other personnel, emphasizing that no external bodies or authorities should dictate recruitment decisions.

The advisory, circulated among industry associations and production houses, aims to safeguard creative autonomy and prevent undue interference in casting and staffing processes. It also calls for adherence to existing labour laws while affirming that hiring choices remain a matter of professional judgment.

Industry observers view the move as a response to recent debates over alleged external pressures on casting decisions. By formally upholding producers' hiring freedom, the state seeks to maintain a conducive environment for content creation across cinema, television and digital platforms.

The government has urged all stakeholders to comply with the advisory and to report any attempts to contravene its provisions. No penalties were detailed, but the statement underscores the administration's commitment to protecting the creative ecosystem in West Bengal.
