The West Bengal government has issued a directive prohibiting teachers who joined within the last year from filing nomination papers for upcoming elections.

The state government of West Bengal has issued a directive that teachers who have joined the service within the last twelve months will not be permitted to file nomination papers for any forthcoming elections. The order, released by the School Education Department, cites concerns about the potential misuse of public office and the need for teachers to remain focused on their educational duties. The ban covers all categories of teachers in government and government‑aided schools, and schools have been instructed to verify the tenure of staff before accepting any nominations. Teachers' unions have criticised the move, arguing that it curtails constitutional rights, while officials say the restriction is a temporary measure aimed at preserving the integrity of the education system. No legal challenge has been recorded yet, and the rule will remain in force for the upcoming Lok Sabha and state assembly polls scheduled later this year.
