IMF data indicates that a depreciating rupee has pushed back the timeline for India to reach a $5-trillion economy to 2029, even as the country records faster real growth.

The latest figures released by the International Monetary Fund show that India’s nominal GDP, when measured in dollars, is being weighed down by the rupee’s weakness. This currency effect has shifted the expected year for crossing the $5-trillion threshold from an earlier estimate to 2029.

Despite the currency drag, the IMF notes that India’s real economic expansion remains robust, with growth rates outpacing many peers. The divergence between nominal and real GDP highlights how exchange‑rate movements can affect headline dollar‑size targets.

Analysts say that while the milestone is delayed in dollar terms, the underlying economy continues to strengthen through domestic investment and consumption. The IMF’s outlook suggests that sustained policy support will be needed to keep the growth momentum alive.
