Weak, Erratic Monsoon Threatens Paddy Harvest in Jharkhand

Unseasonal, uneven rains have left Jharkhand’s rice growers facing a potential shortfall in the upcoming paddy harvest.

The monsoon this year has arrived later than usual and has been marked by irregular showers across Jharkhand, raising concerns among paddy farmers about the viability of this season's crop. Agricultural officials note that the lack of consistent rainfall hampers sowing schedules and reduces soil moisture, both critical for rice cultivation.

Farmers in the state's rice‑growing districts report that many fields remain water‑scarce, forcing them to rely on limited irrigation or to delay planting altogether. Such delays can shorten the growing period, potentially lowering yields and affecting the livelihoods of thousands of small‑holder families.

The Jharkhand Department of Agriculture has begun monitoring soil moisture levels and is urging farmers to adopt water‑saving practices while awaiting clearer forecasts. State officials also indicated that contingency measures, including supplemental irrigation schemes, are being evaluated to mitigate the impact of the weak monsoon.
