VPP leader questioned the Meghalaya government's backing of a gospel concert in Shillong, asserting that the state should uphold secular principles.

The VPP (Vishwa Prakash Party) leader raised concerns on Thursday about the state government's financial and logistical support for a gospel concert scheduled in Shillong, Meghalaya. He argued that providing public resources to a religious event contradicts the secular ethos enshrined in the state's constitution.
The concert, organized by a local Christian group, is set to feature several Indian and international gospel singers and is expected to draw a sizable audience. State officials had earlier confirmed that they would facilitate venue arrangements and security for the event.
Opposition voices, including the VPP leader, contend that such assistance could set a precedent for preferential treatment of specific faiths. They called for a clear policy on the use of public funds for religious gatherings, urging the government to maintain neutrality.
The Meghalaya administration has not yet responded to the criticism, but a spokesperson indicated that the support was intended solely to ensure public safety and order during the event.
The issue adds to ongoing debates in the northeastern state about the balance between cultural expression and secular governance.
