A tanker carrying chemicals overturned on Todi Road in Guna district, prompting locals to gather the liquid in containers, believing it to be edible oil. Authorities later warned that the substance is hazardous and should not be used.

A chemical‑laden tanker capsized on Todi Road in the Chachoura‑Beenaganj area of Guna district, Madhya Pradesh, on Wednesday. The spill attracted a crowd of villagers who, assuming the liquid to be cooking oil, began filling pots, buckets and other containers.

Local residents later admitted they had taken the substance home, believing it could be used for household purposes. The incident quickly escalated as more people arrived to collect the material, turning the accident site into an impromptu collection point.

District officials intervened, cordoning off the area and issuing a clear advisory that the liquid is not edible oil but a chemical mixture that may pose health risks. They urged the public to refrain from handling or consuming the material and to report any exposure to medical facilities.

The authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact nature of the chemicals involved and to assess any environmental impact. Cleanup operations are underway, and the tanker is being towed away for proper disposal.

The incident highlights the need for better public awareness about hazardous material spills and the importance of swift governmental response to prevent misuse of dangerous substances.
