Continuous rainfall in Madhya Pradesh has disrupted vegetable supply, pushing tomato prices from Rs 40 to Rs 50 per kg and okra to around Rs 50 per kg. Consumers are buying smaller quantities, straining household budgets.

The prolonged rain has hampered the arrival of fresh vegetables in markets across Madhya Pradesh. Traders report that the reduced inflow has led to a sharp rise in prices for several staples. Tomato, which was selling at around Rs 40 per kg, now costs Rs 50 per kg, while okra (bhindi) is priced at approximately Rs 50 per kg. In response to the higher rates, households are cutting back on the quantity they purchase, opting for smaller bundles to manage their expenses. This shift in buying behaviour is stretching family budgets, as essential vegetables consume a larger share of daily spending. The information is based on reports from Amar Ujala, covering various markets in the state.
