The Uttarakhand Waqf Board announced plans to introduce a revised Nikahnama that complies with the Uniform Civil Code, aiming to standardize marriage documentation for Muslims in the state. The move is part of broader efforts to align religious marriage practices with national legal frameworks.

The Uttarakhand Waqf Board has revealed that it will prepare a new Nikahnama that conforms to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The document is intended to replace the existing marriage certificates issued to Muslim couples in the state.

A Nikahnama is a legal certificate that records the details of a Muslim marriage. By aligning it with the UCC, the board aims to bring consistency with the civil marriage laws that apply to all citizens, thereby reducing discrepancies in documentation.

The board said the revised Nikahnama will be ready for use by the end of the year, after consultation with legal experts and community leaders. The new form will include standardized fields and will be issued by the board’s official office.

The decision has been welcomed by some legal analysts who view it as a step toward greater uniformity in marriage records across India. Critics, however, caution that the change may face resistance from segments of the community who prefer traditional practices.
