The Uttarakhand government announced plans to set up early‑warning devices at 13 lakes identified as vulnerable to glacial lake outburst floods, aiming to boost disaster preparedness.
The state government of Uttarakhand has approved the installation of early‑warning systems at thirteen glacial lakes that are classified as high‑risk for potential outburst floods. The move is part of a broader disaster‑risk reduction strategy aimed at providing real‑time monitoring of water levels and issuing timely alerts to authorities and nearby communities.
Officials said the selected lakes were identified after a detailed hydro‑geological assessment that highlighted their susceptibility to sudden releases of water. The warning equipment will include sensors, telemetry units and siren networks that can transmit data to a central command centre.
The initiative is expected to enhance the state's capacity to respond swiftly to any abnormal rise in lake levels, thereby reducing the chances of loss of life and property in downstream areas. The project will be rolled out over the coming months, with installation work coordinated by the state disaster management authority.
