The Uttarakhand government announced a step-up in monitoring glacial lakes following the recent devastating floods in Nepal, aiming to improve early warning systems and disaster preparedness.
The state government of Uttarakhand has decided to intensify surveillance of glacial lakes in the Himalayan region after the catastrophic floods that struck Nepal earlier this year. Officials said the move is intended to bolster early‑warning mechanisms and reduce the risk of similar downstream disasters in India.
The Department of Disaster Management will deploy satellite imagery, drone surveys and on‑ground teams to regularly assess lake levels and potential breach threats. Coordination with Nepalese authorities is also being strengthened to share data and jointly monitor transboundary water bodies.
Authorities highlighted that climate‑induced glacier melt has increased the number and size of high‑altitude lakes, making systematic monitoring essential for community safety. The enhanced program will be funded through the state’s disaster mitigation budget and is expected to be operational within the next few months.
