The Uttarakhand energy secretary defended the state's plan to acquire a 1,320 MW thermal power plant, citing reliability and cost benefits.

The Uttarakhand energy secretary has defended the state’s decision to purchase a 1,320 MW thermal power plant amid criticism from environmental groups and some political leaders.

In a statement released yesterday, the secretary said the project will address the growing electricity demand in the state and reduce frequent load shedding, especially during peak summer months.

He added that the thermal plant, which will be built by a private developer under a power purchase agreement, offers a cost‑effective solution compared to alternative renewable projects that require higher upfront capital.

The secretary also highlighted that the project includes provisions for efficient fuel usage and emissions controls to meet national environmental standards.

The purchase is part of Uttarakhand’s broader energy strategy, which aims to diversify the state’s power mix while ensuring reliable supply for industrial and residential consumers.
