Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami accepted rakhis from women and unveiled a scheme offering free bus travel to women across Uttarakhand.
Dehradun, Uttarakhand – Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami took part in a traditional Raksha Bandhan ceremony, receiving rakhis from a group of women gathered at the state secretariat. The symbolic gesture was followed by a policy announcement aimed at improving mobility for women in the hilly state.
During the same event, Dhami announced that the state government will provide free bus travel for women on all public bus services. The scheme is intended to reduce travel costs for female commuters and encourage greater participation in education, employment and health services.
The CM emphasized that the initiative aligns with Uttarakhand’s broader agenda of gender‑inclusive development and will be implemented from the upcoming fiscal year. Transport officials were instructed to update ticketing systems and inform the public through local media.
Stakeholders, including women’s groups and transport unions, welcomed the move, noting that affordable transport can address long‑standing accessibility challenges in remote districts. The government has not disclosed the exact budget allocation for the programme.
