Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami outlined the reasons behind Uttarakhand's decision to implement the Uniform Civil Code, citing social harmony and legal uniformity.
Uttarakhand has moved to adopt the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), a step that the state government says will bring greater legal consistency across its diverse communities. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, speaking at the Economic Times World Leaders Forum 2026, detailed the rationale behind the decision, emphasizing that a common civil law framework can reduce disputes rooted in personal law differences.
The CM highlighted that the UCC aims to promote gender equality, protect individual rights, and simplify legal procedures for marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption. By replacing multiple religious personal laws with a single set of statutes, the government expects to foster social cohesion and eliminate legal ambiguities that have historically caused friction.
Dhami also linked the move to the broader national agenda of uniformity in civil matters, noting that Uttarakhand intends to serve as a model for other states. He assured that the implementation will be phased, with extensive public consultations and safeguards to respect cultural sensitivities while ensuring the rule of law.
The announcement has drawn attention from civil society groups and legal experts, who are watching how the state balances uniformity with the pluralistic fabric of Indian society.
