Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced that all state‑run buses will run free on Raksha Bandhan and that pink electric buses will be deployed exclusively for women commuters.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami used the Raksha Bandhan festival to unveil a transport initiative that will see all state‑run buses offering free travel for the day. In addition, the government will introduce pink‑coloured electric buses that are reserved exclusively for women passengers.
The free‑travel scheme applies to regular bus services across the state on the festival day, aiming to ease family gatherings and encourage the use of public transport during a major cultural celebration.
The pink e‑buses are part of Uttarakhand’s broader push for cleaner, gender‑sensitive mobility. They will operate on selected routes, providing a safer and more comfortable option for female commuters.
Transport officials said the programme will be funded from the state transport department’s budget and could serve as a model for similar schemes during future festivals.
