A woman in Uttar Pradesh was shot dead in her sleep after refusing a man selected by her father, police said.
Police in Uttar Pradesh have opened an investigation after a woman was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head while she was sleeping. According to initial reports, the victim had declined a marriage proposal arranged by her father, and the rejected suitor allegedly shot her in retaliation.
Authorities have detained the accused, identified as the man chosen by the woman's father, and are conducting forensic examinations at the crime scene. The investigation is focusing on motive, weapon procurement and any prior threats made to the victim.
The case has sparked concern in the local community about forced marriages and gender‑based violence. Senior police officials have urged families to resolve matrimonial disputes peacefully and assured that the perpetrator will face strict legal action under the Indian Penal Code.
Further details will be released as the probe progresses, and the police have appealed to witnesses to come forward with any information that could aid the inquiry.
