The Uttar Pradesh cabinet approved a raise in the monthly stipend for MBBS and BDS interns to ₹25,000, aiming to improve training conditions for medical students.
The Uttar Pradesh cabinet announced on Thursday that the monthly stipend for medical interns pursuing MBBS and dental students in BDS programmes will be increased to ₹25,000. The decision, taken during a cabinet meeting in Lucknow, is intended to address financial challenges faced by interns and to make the state more attractive for medical training.
State officials said the hike will be implemented from the next academic session, with the finance department allocating the necessary funds in the upcoming budget. The move aligns with similar stipend revisions in other Indian states, reflecting a broader effort to support healthcare education.
The health ministry welcomed the increase, noting that better remuneration can enhance the quality of patient care provided by interns in government hospitals. Stakeholders, including student unions, have largely praised the decision, while urging the government to ensure timely disbursement.
The cabinet also directed the medical education department to monitor the impact of the revised stipend and report back after six months. If successful, the state may consider further incentives for postgraduate training.
