The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has launched a scheme offering free bus rides to senior women, positioning it as a key welfare move before the 2027 state polls.

The Uttar Pradesh administration, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, unveiled a new welfare initiative that provides free bus travel to women aged 60 and above. The scheme, announced this week, aims to ease mobility challenges faced by senior citizens, particularly in rural and semi‑urban areas where public transport is a lifeline.

Under the program, eligible women can board state‑run and private buses without paying a fare, provided they present a valid age proof document. The government has directed transport corporations to integrate the scheme into existing ticketing systems and to train staff on verification procedures.

Officials said the move is timed to resonate with voters ahead of the 2027 state elections, highlighting the administration's focus on social security for vulnerable groups. The scheme will be funded through the state’s welfare budget, and a monitoring committee will review its impact and financial sustainability over the next year.

Transport unions have welcomed the initiative, noting that it could increase ridership among senior women while also raising awareness about the broader range of government schemes aimed at the elderly.
