A U.S. Marine was taken into custody in Okinawa following allegations of involvement in a murder, reigniting protests against U.S. military bases on the island.
A U.S. Marine was arrested by Okinawan police on Thursday after authorities linked him to the murder of a local resident.
The victim, a 32‑year‑old Okinawan, was found dead in a residential area earlier this month. Investigators say the Marine is suspected of participating in the killing, though details of his alleged role remain under review.
The arrest has sparked fresh protests in Naha, where residents have long demanded the removal of U.S. military installations. Demonstrators gathered outside the U.S. Marine Corps base, chanting slogans against foreign troops.
A U.S. military spokesperson confirmed that the Marine is cooperating with Japanese authorities and that the U.S. forces are cooperating with the investigation. Japanese police are continuing to probe the case.
