UP BJP MLA threatens jail for villagers protesting bad road condition

A BJP legislator in Uttar Pradesh warned villagers that they could be jailed for demanding repairs to a deteriorating village road.
A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator in Uttar Pradesh addressed a gathering of villagers and warned that anyone continuing to protest the poor condition of the local road could face imprisonment. The warning was issued after residents repeatedly raised concerns about potholes and inadequate maintenance that have hampered daily travel and transport of goods.
Villagers said the road, which connects their village to the nearest market town, has become nearly impassable during the monsoon season, causing delays for schoolchildren, commuters, and traders. They had approached the local administration several times, but repairs remain pending.
The MLA’s statement sparked surprise among the crowd, with several elders questioning the appropriateness of threatening legal action over a civic grievance. Local officials, however, indicated that a survey of the road would be conducted and that the state public works department would be notified.
Party sources clarified that the legislator’s remarks were intended to discourage unlawful assemblies, not to suppress legitimate demands for infrastructure improvement. No formal complaint has been lodged against the villagers as of now.
