Unjha Cumin and Fennel Earn GI Tag, Boosting Gujarat’s Spice Profile

The town of Unjha in Gujarat has secured Geographical Indication status for its cumin and fennel, a move that is expected to enhance the region’s reputation as a leading spice producer.

Unjha, a small town in Gujarat’s Kheda district, has been awarded Geographical Indication (GI) status for its cumin and fennel varieties.

The GI tag, granted by the Indian government’s Department of Agriculture, formally recognizes the unique qualities and traditional cultivation methods of Unjha’s spices.

Local farmers say the designation will help protect the brand, improve market access and potentially increase prices for their produce.

Industry experts note that GI certification can boost consumer confidence and open up export opportunities, reinforcing Gujarat’s standing as a key player in the global spice trade.
