Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia virtually inaugurated the renovated General Post Office in Shillong, marking the rollout of new digital services by India Post.
Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia conducted a virtual ceremony to open the newly renovated General Post Office in Shillong, signalling a fresh push for modernisation in the city’s postal infrastructure. The online event allowed officials and staff from India Post to showcase the upgraded premises without a physical gathering.
The refurbishment of the Shillong GPO includes revamped customer counters, improved accessibility features and state‑of‑the‑art digital kiosks designed to streamline mail handling and payment processes. The work was completed under the aegis of the Ministry of Communications, aiming to bring the historic building up to contemporary standards.
Alongside the inauguration, India Post launched a suite of digital services from the Shillong outlet, enabling customers to track parcels, pay bills and access other postal functions through a dedicated mobile platform. These services are part of a nationwide drive to digitise postal operations and enhance user convenience.
Local residents and businesses are expected to benefit from faster transaction times and reduced paperwork, as the new digital tools integrate with existing postal networks across the region. The virtual launch underscores the government's commitment to leveraging technology for public service delivery even in remote locations.
