The Union Minister unveiled a set of measures aimed at boosting milk production and farmer incomes in Sikkim's dairy industry.
New Delhi – In a brief address in Gangtok, the Union Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairying announced a package of initiatives designed to strengthen Sikkim's dairy sector. The measures focus on improving cold‑chain infrastructure, providing financial assistance to small‑scale dairy farmers, and facilitating training programmes on modern animal husbandry practices.
The minister emphasized that the dairy industry is a vital source of livelihood for many households in the hilly state and that enhanced productivity will contribute to food security and rural employment. He also highlighted plans to promote indigenous cattle breeds and to create market linkages that can fetch better prices for farmers.
State officials welcomed the announcement, noting that the new schemes will be coordinated with the Sikkim State Dairy Development Board to ensure swift implementation. The initiatives are expected to be rolled out over the coming months, with periodic reviews to assess impact on milk output and farmer welfare.
Stakeholders, including cooperative societies and dairy cooperatives, have been urged to submit proposals for funding and technical support under the new framework. The minister assured that the central government will monitor progress and make adjustments as needed to achieve sustainable growth in the sector.
