A ₹91‑crore underground tunnel beneath the railway line near Ujjain is being constructed to smooth pilgrim traffic to Mahakaleshwar Temple and reduce congestion.
The Madhya Pradesh Railway Authority has approved a ₹91‑crore underground tunnel project that will run beneath the existing railway line near Ujjain. The tunnel is intended to provide a direct, congestion‑free route for devotees traveling to the Mahakaleshwar Temple, one of the city’s most visited pilgrimage sites.
The construction involves a challenging segment where a significant portion of the tunnel will pass directly under active railway tracks. While the overall project cost is estimated at ₹91 crore, the railway’s share for the under‑track section is earmarked at ₹31 crore, reflecting the technical complexity of the work.
Officials expect the tunnel to cut travel time for pilgrims and alleviate traffic jams that typically build up during festival seasons. Completion is slated for the next two years, after which the new passage will be opened to the public, enhancing both safety and convenience for visitors to the holy shrine.
