Ujjain Muslims Protest Road Widening Threat to Shahi Masjid, Reach Deal Awaiting HC Ruling

Muslim residents of Ujjain protested against a proposed road widening project that threatened part of the historic Shahi Masjid. After talks with authorities, they reached an agreement, and the matter is now scheduled for hearing in the Madhya Pradesh High Court today.
The protest began when local Muslim groups learned that the road widening plan for the Singhsthal 2028 project could require demolition of a portion of the Shahi Masjid. Demonstrators gathered near the mosque, expressing fears that the historic site would be damaged or altered.
Community leaders said the mosque, which has stood for centuries, holds significant religious and cultural value for the area. They warned that any encroachment would hurt the sentiments of the Muslim population and requested a reassessment of the project alignment.
After several rounds of discussion between the mosque committee, local administration and representatives of the protesting groups, a consensus was reached to modify the road plan so that the mosque structure remains untouched. Both sides agreed to submit the revised proposal for legal scrutiny.
The matter has now been placed before the Madhya Pradesh High Court, which will hear arguments today regarding the legality of the revised alignment and the protection of the mosque’s premises. The court’s decision will determine the next steps for the Singhsthal 2028 road widening initiative.
