Tamil Nadu politician Udhayanidhi Stalin was taken into custody following a controversial remark about the Cauvery river, sparking political debate across the state.
Police in Tamil Nadu detained Udhayanidhi Stalin, the son of DMK leader and a sitting member of the legislative assembly, after he made a contentious remark about the Cauvery river. The comment, which was posted on social media, was deemed inflammatory by authorities.
Stalin was taken into custody at a police station in Chennai and is currently being held pending further investigation. The police cited concerns that his statement could incite communal tensions along the river basin.
The move has drawn criticism from opposition parties, who argue that the arrest is politically motivated. Meanwhile, supporters of the DMK have called for a fair inquiry into the incident.
Lawmakers from both sides have called for a transparent legal process, emphasizing the need to uphold freedom of expression while preventing communal discord.
