Forest officials in Madhya Pradesh’s Kanha Tiger Reserve seized hunting gear and recovered a dead female sambar, arresting two suspects suspected of poaching.

Forest officials in Mandla district’s Kanha Tiger Reserve intercepted a poaching operation after a female sambar was found dead inside the protected area. The carcass, recovered during a routine patrol, showed signs of illegal hunting.

During the ensuing raid, the forest‑department’s anti‑poaching team seized a hunting kit, including a rifle, ammunition, and other paraphernalia linked to the crime. Two individuals present at the scene were taken into custody after their identities were established through the recovered equipment.

Investigators noted that the sambar’s body bore indications of possible poisoning, raising concerns that the poachers intended to use toxins to evade detection. The suspects are being interrogated, and forensic analysis of the carcass is underway to confirm the method of killing.

The Kanha Forest Department reiterated its zero‑tolerance policy towards wildlife crime, emphasizing ongoing surveillance and community awareness programs aimed at protecting the reserve’s biodiversity.
