Two men were taken into custody in Serilingampally on Tuesday after police uncovered an extortion plot in which they posed as journalists.
According to the Hyderabad Police, the suspects approached a local businessman, claiming they were covering a story and demanded a large sum of money as a “media fee.” The businessman complied, and the men fled the scene.
The arrested men were found in possession of forged press passes and other documents that could have misled the victim. They are now being held on charges of extortion and impersonation of a media professional.
The incident has raised concerns about the ease with which individuals can fake journalistic credentials and the need for stricter verification processes by businesses and media houses alike.
