Two teenagers from Jharkhand lost their lives in separate drowning incidents while participating in Jitiya festival celebrations, officials said.
Two teenage residents of Jharkhand died after drowning in separate incidents that occurred while families were observing the Jitiya festival, a traditional celebration dedicated to the well‑being of children. Local authorities confirmed that each incident happened at different water bodies, but both were linked to the heightened activity around the festival.
The victims, both in their early teens, were reportedly with relatives when they slipped into the water. Rescue teams were dispatched promptly, but the youths could not be revived. Police have opened inquiries to ascertain whether safety measures were lacking at the sites.
Community leaders have called for stricter supervision of water‑related activities during festivals, urging families to keep children away from ponds, rivers and irrigation canals. The district administration announced plans to increase patrols and install warning signs near vulnerable spots.
Funeral rites for the teenagers are expected to be performed later this week, with local residents expressing grief and demanding better safety protocols for future celebrations.
