A 12‑year‑old and an 11‑year‑old boy drowned while playing on a dam of a Bagmati River tributary in Basgatha village, Muzaffarpur district, Bihar.

Muzaffarpur district’s Basgatha village witnessed a tragic accident on a tributary of the Bagmati River, where two school‑aged boys lost their lives. The 12‑year‑old, identified as Rishabh Kumar, and his 11‑year‑old friend, Adarsh Kumar, had gone to the riverbank to play on a small dam that spans the waterway.

According to local reports, one of the boys slipped while on the dam, prompting the other to rush forward in an attempt to rescue him. Both fell into the fast‑moving water and were unable to reach safety. Villagers who heard the splash quickly gathered, but the current proved too strong for a successful rescue.

Emergency services were called, and a search team from the district administration arrived within hours. Despite their efforts, the bodies of the two children were recovered later that day, confirming their deaths. The incident has left the close‑knit community in deep mourning, with many expressing shock at the loss of such young lives.

Local authorities have announced a review of safety measures around the river’s embankments and dams to prevent similar tragedies. A condolence meeting is planned at the village panchayat office, where officials will meet grieving families and discuss possible support.

The incident underscores the risks associated with unsupervised play near water bodies in rural Bihar, prompting calls for increased awareness and safety infrastructure.
