Tura Civil Hospital in Meghalaya successfully performed the state's first limb‑salvage operation at a district‑level hospital, marking a milestone in local medical care.

Tura Civil Hospital in the West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya has carried out the state's inaugural limb‑salvage surgery at a district‑level facility. The procedure, aimed at preserving a severely injured or diseased limb rather than resorting to amputation, was performed by a team of surgeons trained in the technique.

Health officials hailed the operation as a significant step toward decentralising advanced surgical care, which previously required patients to travel to tertiary hospitals in larger cities. By offering such specialised treatment locally, the hospital hopes to reduce both the financial burden and the recovery time for patients from remote areas.

The successful surgery underscores the ongoing efforts of the Meghalaya health department to upgrade district hospitals with modern equipment and skilled personnel. Authorities plan to replicate the model in other districts, expanding access to complex procedures across the state.
