The sole hydroelectric facility in Tripura is slated for revival in December, backed by a Rs 100 crore allocation.
The government of Tripura has announced that the state’s only hydroelectric plant will be revived in December, with a dedicated fund of Rs 100 crore earmarked for the project. The decision comes as part of the state’s effort to augment its power generation capacity and reduce dependence on external electricity supplies.
The revival is expected to add several megawatts of renewable energy to the state grid, helping to address chronic power shortages that have hampered industrial growth and daily life in the region. Officials say the project will also create temporary construction jobs and stimulate ancillary industries.
Work is slated to begin in early December, with completion targeted within a year, subject to weather and logistical conditions. The state electricity board will oversee the refurbishment, which includes replacing aging turbines, upgrading control systems, and improving water flow management.
Tripura’s move aligns with the broader national push toward clean energy, as the central government encourages states to expand hydro and other renewable sources to meet India’s climate commitments.
