The Tripura government announced the creation of the region's second tea auction centre, a move expected to strengthen the local tea trade.
Tripura's state administration confirmed that a new tea auction centre will be set up, marking the second such facility in India's Northeast region. The decision follows a strategic push to provide local growers with a dedicated marketplace, reducing reliance on distant auction houses.
The centre, slated to operate under the aegis of the Tea Board of India, will cater to tea estates across Tripura and neighboring states. Officials expect it to streamline price discovery, improve transparency and enhance earnings for small and medium growers.
The Northeast's tea sector, historically anchored by Assam's long‑standing auction infrastructure, has seen growing production in Tripura over recent years. By establishing a local auction hub, the state aims to capture a larger share of domestic and export markets.
State representatives indicated that the facility will create ancillary employment opportunities and encourage investment in tea processing and quality improvement initiatives.
