Tripura water resources minister Kishore Barman has asked the central Jal Shakti Ministry for support to restore the Ramsar‑listed Rudrasagar lake.
Tripura water resources minister Kishore Barman has formally appealed to the central Ministry of Jal Shakti for assistance in restoring and developing Rudrasagar, a lake recognised under the Ramsar Convention.
Rudrasagar, situated in the southern part of the state, is internationally noted for its rich biodiversity and supports local fisheries and tourism. In recent years, the lake has suffered from siltation, invasive species and declining water quality, raising concerns among environmentalists and nearby communities.
Barman’s request outlines measures such as desilting, shoreline stabilization and the creation of eco‑tourism infrastructure, aligning with the central government’s wetland‑conservation programmes. Officials said a detailed project proposal will be submitted shortly, and funding could be drawn from existing Jal Shakti schemes.
If approved, the intervention is expected to improve livelihoods of surrounding villages, enhance flood control and reinforce Tripura’s commitment to its Ramsar obligations.
