Tripura has unveiled a new promotion policy for 2026 that allows a single ad‑hoc promotion, a move that clears procedural hurdles amid an ongoing Supreme Court case.

The Government of Tripura today announced the Promotion Policy 2026, which permits a one‑time ad‑hoc promotion for eligible government employees. The policy is designed to streamline promotion processes and address the backlog that has affected many civil servants.

Officials said the new framework will allow departments to grant promotions based on merit and service record without the need for a full promotion board, thereby speeding up career progression. The policy also introduces clear eligibility criteria and a transparent review mechanism.

The announcement comes as Tripura is embroiled in a Supreme Court case that scrutinised earlier promotion procedures. The new policy is said to align with the court’s directives and ensure compliance with constitutional norms.

Implementation will begin in the upcoming fiscal year, with departmental boards overseeing the process and regular audits to maintain accountability.
