The Tripura government has installed a network of 515 CCTV, 81 red‑light violation detection and 43 automatic number‑plate recognition cameras across Agartala to monitor traffic and reduce violations.
The state of Tripura has rolled out an extensive smart‑traffic system in its capital, Agartala, deploying a total of 639 cameras. The deployment includes 515 closed‑circuit television (CCTV) units, 81 red‑light violation detection (RLVD) cameras and 43 automatic number‑plate recognition (ANPR) devices.
These cameras are networked to a central monitoring hub that records real‑time footage and automatically flags traffic offences such as red‑light jumps and unregistered vehicles. The ANPR units capture licence‑plate data, enabling rapid identification of violators and streamlining fine collection.
State officials said the initiative aims to improve road safety, deter reckless driving and generate data for better traffic‑management planning. The technology is expected to reduce the incidence of traffic violations and enhance compliance with existing traffic rules.
The project forms part of Tripura’s broader push toward smart‑city infrastructure, with authorities planning to expand similar surveillance solutions to other urban centres in the coming months.
