Facing pressure from consumers and opposition groups, the Tripura state government said it will bear the entire cost of the recent electricity tariff hike.
The Tripura administration announced on Wednesday that it will provide a 100% subsidy on the recent increase in electricity tariffs, effectively neutralising the price rise for residential consumers. The decision comes after sustained protests by consumer groups and criticism from political opponents who warned of hardship for low‑income households.
State officials said the subsidy will be funded through the state’s contingency reserve and will be implemented immediately, with the electricity board instructed to adjust billing cycles accordingly. The move is expected to cost the state treasury several crore rupees, but authorities argue it is necessary to maintain public goodwill and avoid further unrest.
Analysts note that while the subsidy eases the immediate burden on households, it may strain the state’s fiscal balance and could prompt a review of future tariff policies. The government has pledged to monitor the scheme’s impact and consider long‑term reforms to the power sector.
The announcement was made at a press conference in the state capital, where the chief minister emphasized the administration’s commitment to affordable energy for all citizens.
