The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has issued new interconnection guidelines that will take effect in January 2027, aiming to streamline network sharing and enhance service quality.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has formally released a set of interconnection rules that are slated to become operational from January 2027. The guidelines are part of TRAI’s ongoing effort to modernise the telecom ecosystem and address long‑standing concerns over network sharing practices.
Key provisions of the new framework include mandatory timelines for establishing interconnection agreements, a transparent cost‑allocation mechanism, and a streamlined dispute‑resolution process. Operators will also be required to adhere to quality‑of‑service benchmarks when routing traffic through partner networks.
Industry analysts expect the rules to promote fair competition by reducing bottlenecks that have previously hampered smaller players. Consumers could benefit from improved call quality and reduced call‑drop rates as networks become more efficiently linked.
TRAI has opened a public consultation period for stakeholders to submit feedback before the final version is locked in. The regulator has indicated that compliance monitoring will commence shortly after the January 2027 rollout, with periodic reviews to assess impact.
