Hydrologists say that rising water levels from recent floods in Tibet may swell the Ganges and its tributaries, putting Bihar at heightened flood risk.

Recent heavy rainfall and glacial melt in Tibet have triggered flooding in the high‑altitude catchments that feed major rivers such as the Yarlung Tsangpo, which becomes the Brahmaputra downstream. Hydrologists note that the increased discharge can travel through the Himalayan watershed and eventually join the Ganges system that drains Bihar.

The Indian Meteorological Department has highlighted the trans‑border nature of river flows, warning that upstream floods can raise water levels in downstream states within days. Bihar, already vulnerable to monsoon floods, could see higher river stages in the Ganges and its tributaries, heightening the risk of inundation in low‑lying districts.

State officials are monitoring river gauges and have urged local administrations to review flood‑control measures. While no immediate emergency has been declared, the warning underscores the need for coordinated water‑resource management between neighboring countries to mitigate downstream impacts.
