Michael Jackson’s Thriller has returned to the top of the US iTunes chart as Halloween approaches, driven by a surge in digital downloads and streams.
Michael Jackson’s iconic album Thriller has climbed back to the top spot on the US iTunes chart, riding a wave of renewed interest as Halloween approaches. The 1982 release, which has sold over 66 million copies worldwide, has seen a surge in digital downloads and streams, pushing it to number one ahead of contemporary releases. Industry analysts note that seasonal themes and nostalgic playlists are driving the spike, with many users seeking classic tracks for holiday celebrations.
The album’s resurgence is part of a broader trend of legacy artists experiencing chart comebacks during holiday periods. Similar patterns have been observed with other classic titles, as listeners turn to familiar music for seasonal events. The iTunes chart reflects both purchase activity and streaming data, indicating a significant uptick in Thriller’s consumption across platforms.
Music streaming services and record labels have highlighted the success, with some noting that the album’s sales figures could push it closer to the coveted 100‑million‑copies milestone. Fans and collectors have also taken advantage of the moment, with limited edition vinyl and merchandise sales spiking in online stores.
